The rivalry between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Barcelona in the transfer market continues to intensify, now revolving around a high-profile player eager to leave the French club for the Catalan side. According to the Spanish newspaper El Nacional, Fabian Ruiz has decided to end his stint at PSG and is seeking a fresh challenge elsewhere.
The midfielder has reportedly lost motivation and fallen out with coach Luis Enrique, a conflict stemming from their previous interactions during Enrique’s tenure with the Spanish national team.
Ruiz has grown disillusioned with PSG’s project, particularly after Kylian Mbappé’s departure and the club’s failure to secure a marquee signing to fill the void. Furthermore, his position in the squad has been diminished, with new arrival Joao Neves overtaking him in the midfield pecking order.
Although Ruiz contemplated leaving during the last transfer window, he ultimately stayed at the Parc des Princes. Now, however, he believes it is the right time to move on, with his sights set on returning to La Liga after more than six years abroad.
Previously linked with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, Ruiz now seems most likely to join Barcelona. The Catalan club’s president, Joan Laporta, and sporting director, Deco, are reportedly keen on signing him, impressed by his performances in the European Championship and his role in Spain’s national team under Luis de la Fuente.
Barcelona’s interest aligns with their need to reinforce the midfield, especially with Frenkie de Jong potentially leaving and Pablo Torre seeking more playing time elsewhere. Ruiz’s versatility and experience make him an attractive option, as he can adapt to various midfield roles.
However, financial considerations pose a challenge. Barcelona are unwilling to pay a hefty fee for the 28-year-old, while PSG initially demanded €35 million—an amount deemed excessive given Ruiz’s career history at clubs like Real Betis, Elche, and Napoli.
In response, Ruiz has personally appealed to PSG’s management, urging them to lower their asking price to facilitate his transfer. He hopes for goodwill from both coach Luis Enrique and PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, advocating for a more reasonable fee of around €25 million.
Ruiz’s determination to join Barcelona underscores his desire for a smooth transition, leaving the next steps in the hands of both clubs’ negotiators.
