The timing of Ten Hag’s departure is notable, coming just 116 days after he received a contract extension following United’s FA Cup win over Manchester City. This new contract had initially signaled the club’s trust in his leadership. However, the abrupt decision to let him go has left fans and analysts questioning the club’s long-term planning.
Many argue that if the board had assessed the situation thoroughly, they might have made the decision at the end of last season, allowing Ten Hag to depart on a positive note and giving a new manager the full pre-season to implement changes and build a renewed strategy.
Luckhurst was direct in his criticism, describing the dismissal process as a “mess” indicative of weak leadership at the top. He highlighted a pattern of indecisive management that, in his view, tarnishes the reputation of the club’s ownership.
