Paul Merson, a former Arsenal star and current football pundit, has offered his prediction ahead of the upcoming UEFA Champions League semi-final clash between Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The two clubs are set to face each other over two legs in what many are calling one of the most eagerly awaited encounters in recent Champions League history.
Despite facing inconsistency in their Premier League campaign, Arsenal have displayed a different level of performance in Europe. Their impressive quarter-final victory against Real Madrid, where they secured wins in both legs, has significantly boosted their reputation as genuine contenders for the European title.
On the other hand, PSG, under the leadership of manager Luis Enrique, have also delivered strong performances. With attacking talents such as Ousmane Dembele and Kylian Mbappe, they have managed to overcome numerous obstacles to reach the semi-finals. Nevertheless, their past failures in critical stages of the competition continue to loom over them.
While speaking on Sky Sports, Merson confidently stated that he expects Arsenal to triumph over PSG across both legs. He acknowledged the quality within the PSG squad but emphasized that Arsenal’s recent European form and their historical resilience provide them with a clear advantage in this contest.
Merson highlighted PSG’s tendency to falter during crucial knockout matches, referencing past games against Premier League teams like Liverpool and Aston Villa as examples where PSG failed to cope under pressure. He pointed out that despite playing well at times, PSG were unable to secure results in high-pressure situations.
He further praised Arsenal’s development under Mikel Arteta, particularly the team’s defensive solidity and midfield discipline. Players such as William Saliba, Declan Rice, and Gabriel Magalhães have transformed Arsenal into a defensively robust unit, which Merson believes will be crucial in dealing with PSG’s attacking threats.
Declan Rice was singled out by Merson as a key figure in Arsenal’s potential success. He noted that Rice’s physical presence and ability to control the midfield could pose significant problems for PSG, especially considering the struggles their midfielders have faced against other physically dominant teams.
Merson concluded by asserting that while PSG have individual talents capable of producing decisive moments, Arsenal’s overall organization, discipline, and consistency would likely secure their place in the final.
