German coach Hansi Flick, currently in charge of Barcelona, made a decisive call by leaving two players out of the squad traveling to Gran Canaria for their La Liga clash against Las Palmas on Saturday evening.
With 25 players available for selection, Flick had to trim the squad down to 23, ultimately opting to exclude Ansu Fati and Andreas Christensen.
Both players had trained alongside their teammates during group sessions; however, Christensen, the Danish defender, had not yet received medical clearance to return to competitive action. Meanwhile, Ansu Fati, despite being fit, was left out of the squad once again, reflecting the difficult situation he finds himself in under Flick’s management.
Fati had been included in Barcelona’s squad for the previous match against Rayo Vallecano, but this marks the sixth time in 2025 that he has been omitted by the German coach. His continued exclusion highlights a growing disconnect between him and the club’s current plans.
Reports from the Spanish outlet “El Nacional” suggest that Flick does not see Fati as a valuable asset to the team and intends to keep him sidelined in future matches, possibly pushing him toward an exit from the club.
As for Christensen, his absence is primarily due to fitness concerns rather than tactical decisions. Although he has been participating in team training for two consecutive days, he is still working towards full match readiness.
Until he regains the necessary fitness levels and receives medical approval, he will remain unavailable for selection.
Flick’s latest squad decision underlines his strict approach to team selection and his determination to shape Barcelona’s squad according to his vision.
While Christensen’s return depends on medical clearance, Fati’s situation appears far more uncertain, raising questions about his future at the club.
