Argentine star Lionel Messi, currently playing for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer (MLS), could make a temporary return to European football soon, with his club’s consent. According to the Spanish newspaper Marca, Inter Miami is considering allowing Messi to join a European team early next year.
This move would help him maintain competitive form, especially with the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, where Messi aims to lead Argentina in defending their title. The MLS season does not align with World Cup preparation schedules, making this arrangement beneficial for Messi’s fitness and performance.
Inter Miami is also reportedly planning to extend Messi’s contract, including provisions for another European stint during late 2025 and early 2026.
Such flexibility could see Messi emulate the career paths of Thierry Henry and Zlatan Ibrahimović, both of whom had brief European loan spells while under contract with MLS clubs. Henry returned to Arsenal for two months, while Ibrahimović joined AC Milan on loan from the LA Galaxy.
If Messi returns to Europe, it is unlikely to be with Barcelona due to their ongoing financial challenges. Instead, Manchester City is emerging as a potential destination, where he could reunite with his former Barcelona coach, Pep Guardiola.
The Premier League champions are reportedly keen to sign Messi in the upcoming transfer window, leveraging their financial strength and Guardiola’s connection with the Argentine.
This potential move highlights Messi’s enduring influence in global football and the strategic planning by Inter Miami to balance his MLS commitments with his international career aspirations. While a return to Barcelona would have sentimental value, logistical and financial barriers make Manchester City a more feasible option for a short-term European spell.
