Barcelona secured a memorable and historic victory over Benfica in a dramatic encounter at the Estadio da Luz in Portugal during the seventh round of the Champions League group stage.
The Catalan side triumphed with an electrifying 5-4 comeback, marking one of the most remarkable matches in the tournament’s history.
According to the Spanish outlet El Nacional, Barcelona’s president, Joan Laporta, was particularly impressed by the performance of Álvaro Carreras, a 21-year-old Spanish full-back for Benfica, during the match.
His exceptional display caught Laporta’s attention, prompting him to authorize Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, to pursue the player’s signing. Although Carreras had previously been on Barcelona’s radar, his standout performance against them solidified the club’s decision to act decisively.
Barcelona has been actively searching for a reliable left-back to provide much-needed rest for Alejandro Balde. Carreras, with his versatility, defensive prowess, and ability to contribute offensively, fits perfectly into coach Hansi Flick’s tactical plans. Flick has reportedly approved the player’s potential addition, viewing him as a strategic fit for the team.
Initial reports suggest that Benfica is open to negotiating Carreras’ transfer for approximately €20 million. However, Barcelona’s financial difficulties and the constraints of financial fair play regulations might delay the move until the summer transfer window unless the club can generate sufficient revenue through player sales in the winter.
Despite these challenges, the Catalan side remains optimistic about completing the deal, considering Carreras an invaluable asset for their left-back position.
Currently, the only backup option to Balde is Gerard Martín, who lacks the full confidence of the coaching staff. The addition of Carreras would not only provide Flick with more tactical flexibility but also address the depth issues in the squad, which have been a concern this season.
The responsibility now lies with Deco to finalize the deal before Carreras’ value rises or financial restrictions complicate the process.
Laporta has given his approval, signaling Barcelona’s intent to prioritize strengthening their defense. Carreras is seen as both an immediate solution and a long-term investment, making this a pivotal move for the club’s future.
