The incident occurred in the 82nd minute when Fernandes was given his second yellow card for a high-foot challenge. Earlier in the game, he had already been booked for a similar offense, also involving a raised foot.

On both occasions, Fernandes was attempting to connect with the ball during attacking plays. In the second instance, he tried to reach a cross into the box by raising his foot, but Porto defender Nehuen Perez had already positioned himself to clear the ball with a header. Unfortunately, Fernandes’ high foot collided with Perez, who went down clutching his face. The referee, left with little choice, issued a second yellow card, which was followed by a red card.

Paul Robinson, a former Premier League goalkeeper, discussed the situation on BBC Radio 5 Live. He acknowledged that while Fernandes’ attention was focused on the ball, the challenge was reckless and dangerous, leaving the referee with no alternative but to send him off. “Bruno Fernandes is frustrated,” Robinson said. “He went in high with his foot, and it’s a dangerous play. In his defence, he’s watching the ball, but when you go in like that, the referee doesn’t have a choice.”
