Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is reportedly eager to strengthen the squad in January by targeting a £50 million signing to cover for Bukayo Saka’s absence. As revealed by David Ornstein, Arteta is pushing for the acquisition of Nico Williams, Athletic Bilbao’s highly-rated winger, to fill the void left by Saka, who is sidelined until March following hamstring surgery.
The injury to Saka, a key figure in Arsenal’s attack, has significantly impacted the team, as evidenced by their recent 2-0 loss to Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
In the first leg at the Emirates, Newcastle capitalized on Arsenal’s inefficiency in front of goal, with Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon scoring for the visitors.
Arsenal missed numerous opportunities, prompting Arteta to highlight the need for improved finishing. “We need to be more clinical and create better chances to maximize our potential,” he said. Despite the disappointment, Arteta remains focused on preparing the team for the second leg at St. James’ Park in February.
To address their attacking struggles, Arsenal are exploring options for a goal-scoring winger. Williams, a 22-year-old Spanish international, has emerged as a primary target. Known for his pace, creativity, and ability to take on defenders, Williams contributed 19 assists and eight goals during the 2023/24 season across all competitions.
His performances in La Liga have been exceptional, leading his team in successful take-ons per 90 minutes and matching his brother Inaki in shots per match, according to WhoScored.
Williams’ contract at Athletic Bilbao includes a buy-out clause of approximately £50 million, making him an attainable option for Arsenal. However, a transfer in January may prove challenging due to financial constraints and the player’s apparent preference to remain at Bilbao for now.
Despite this, Arsenal could still pursue an offer to convince Williams to join, especially given his potential to bolster their attack during a critical period.
While a summer move might seem more feasible, Arteta’s insistence on securing reinforcements in January reflects the urgency to keep Arsenal competitive in the title race and other competitions.
Should the club succeed in acquiring Williams, his attributes and experience as a Euro 2024 participant could significantly enhance Arsenal’s attacking options in Saka’s absence.
