Erik ten Hag finds himself under intense scrutiny at Manchester United following a dismal performance against Tottenham. Had Tottenham capitalized on their opportunities, they could have easily secured a 5-0 win, but a 3-0 defeat still serves as a significant humiliation for United, especially given their lackluster showing even with a full squad.
The responsibility for this poor display falls squarely on Ten Hag, who has exhausted his list of excuses.
One of his most frequently cited reasons has been the need for time. Now in his third season, Ten Hag has yet to establish a clear game plan. Against Tottenham, his approach seemed limited to attempting counterattacks, which has not proven effective.
In contrast, managers like Enzo Maresca at Chelsea and Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham have quickly made their mark. Ten Hag’s squad appears directionless, with chaotic performances leading to a decline in player confidence.
Another excuse has been the lack of structural support behind the scenes, often attributed to the Glazers’ ownership. However, since Ineos took over, they have revamped the club’s management, removing ineffective figures like John Murtough and Richard Arnold and bringing in a competent team.
The recent transfer window saw the club support Ten Hag by signing his desired players at reasonable prices, which has only intensified the spotlight on him as results continue to falter.
Injuries have also been a common justification for poor performances. While United faced significant injury challenges last season, the current situation doesn’t warrant the same excuse. With only a few players like Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia sidelined, Ten Hag’s decision not to sign a backup left-back, despite prior knowledge of their injury histories, raises questions. Meanwhile, Tottenham managed without their star player, Heung-Min Son, demonstrating that injuries alone cannot account for United’s shortcomings.
This season, Manchester United’s results have been disappointing, leaving them in the lower half of the Premier League standings. Despite glimpses of potential improvement, the team struggles to convert chances, having failed to score in three of their last four league matches. With Ten Hag’s excuses increasingly irrelevant, the pressure on him is mounting.
Ineos reportedly explored potential replacements for Ten Hag over the summer, and while they hesitated then, the situation may soon force their hand. The fan base is growing disillusioned, and if the team’s form does not improve, the players’ morale could begin to wane as well.
