Manchester United, bruised by a calamitous 2024/25 season that saw them slump to fifteenth in the Premier League and lose the Europa League final to Spurs, are throwing every last spark of ambition into the transfer market. Even without European football on the horizon, manager Ruben Amorim seems hell-bent on reviving the Red Devils’ faded legend. Matheus Cunha has already come in from Wolves to slot into the dual number 10 setup, while Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo reportedly fancies a switch to Old Trafford over Tottenham.
The club’s recruitment drive isn’t stopping there. Emiliano Martinez has been identified as Amorim’s preferred goalkeeper signing, and the Villa man is apparently open to joining the rebuild. Riding the wave of optimism, United are now eyeing an audacious move for Fabian Ruiz, the silky Spanish playmaker who helped Paris Saint-Germain conquer Europe last season. A report from France claims United have planted a €50 million bid on the table for the Euro 2024 winner, hoping to convince him to trade Paris for Manchester.
Fabian Ruiz has blossomed at PSG, securing three Ligue 1 titles and the coveted Champions League crown since arriving from Napoli in 2022. Spain boss Luis de la Fuente even called him “world class,” a fitting label for a player who marries elegance with consistency. Last season alone, Ruiz bagged four league goals and set up five more, while chipping in with vital contributions across 17 Champions League fixtures. That pedigree makes him exactly the kind of midfielder United are desperate for—steady, creative, and proven at the highest level.
But dreaming is cheap, and the reality is brutal: PSG have little appetite to cash in on such a key figure. Luis Enrique plans to keep his trusted midfield trio—Ruiz, Vitinha, and Joao Neves—fully intact for the coming campaign. From their perspective, offloading Ruiz to a club now marooned outside Europe’s elite competitions simply isn’t worth entertaining. Even if United dangle hefty wages, the appeal of sticking with PSG’s winning machine is hard to beat.
Ruiz himself seems perfectly content in Paris, where he is trusted, regularly playing, and lifting trophies. Moving to Old Trafford at this stage—especially given United’s battered reputation and uncertain prospects—would mean stepping down from the Champions League limelight into an unpredictable rebuild. Unless something dramatic changes, he has no clear motive to push for the switch.
If United’s reported €50 million offer is genuine, it’s a respectable figure but likely falls short. Given Ruiz’s form and his Euro 2024 winner status, PSG will almost certainly rate him closer to €60–70 million or higher. Especially with Joao Neves valued above £85 million, PSG have no need to budge. United will need either a much bigger bid or a clever strategy to pry him away.
The only real hope is that PSG land another top-tier midfielder this summer—someone like Bruno Guimarães or Frenkie de Jong. That could knock Ruiz down the pecking order and prompt him to consider a move. Alternatively, if Amorim can sell him on the idea of becoming the heartbeat of a new United era—and back that up with further marquee signings—the project might start to look more enticing.
For now, though, the odds are stacked against this transfer. Barring a shock turn of events, United will have to turn their attention to other targets like Joao Neves, Khephren Thuram, or Ederson, who look far more attainable. Fabian Ruiz might be the dream, but without Champions League football or PSG’s cooperation, it’s a dream that risks dying on the drawing board.
