Last season, Mbeumo netted 20 goals in the league, putting himself firmly on Newcastle’s shortlist for a marquee signing. Despite their keen interest, the high wages he demanded and Brentford’s steep valuation eventually led Newcastle to walk away, paving the way for United to swoop.

 

Negotiations between United and Brentford progressed after an initial £45 million plus £10 million add-ons offer fell through. A revised proposal, reportedly totalling over £60 million, finally nudged talks toward agreement, with United determined to secure Mbeumo’s signature.

 

TalkSPORT indicated Mbeumo’s medical was planned for the following week, and word spread that he was in line to earn £200,000 a week at Old Trafford. This figure was a key reason Newcastle pulled out, deciding to pursue more affordable targets instead of competing financially.

 

After abandoning Mbeumo, Newcastle quickly turned their attention to Nottingham Forest’s Anthony Elanga. Their first bid of £45 million was rejected outright, but they remain interested in signing the Swedish winger before the window closes.

 

Forest are not eager to sell Elanga and reportedly value him at around £60 million. Though Newcastle balked at similar figures in the Mbeumo talks, they may be forced to reconsider or switch targets again, with names like Kudus, Semenyo, and Bakayoko also on their radar.

 

Despite widespread claims, there is still no formal confirmation from Manchester United that Mbeumo has signed, nor any credible evidence that he’s been handed a “legendary” squad number. As it stands, negotiations are advanced but incomplete, and any mention of Ruben Amorim endorsing the deal is inaccurate.
