Manchester United are seriously weighing the idea of bringing in Bayern Munich’s Joao Palhinha on loan after realizing that Atalanta’s Ederson is financially out of reach. Despite being a fan-favorite and top target, Ederson’s valuation has slammed the brakes on United’s pursuit. After already dropping big money on Matheus Cunha to boost their attack, the club now finds itself tight on funds for midfield reinforcements—leaving Palhinha as a more affordable, yet still ambitious, alternative.
With the 2024/25 season ending in disappointment—no trophies, no European football—head coach Ruben Amorim is under pressure to strengthen the squad without spending beyond the remaining budget. One of his more controversial moves could involve selling Alejandro Garnacho to free up cash. However, Amorim is also scouting more cost-effective solutions, especially as he prepares to square off against Arsenal in their Premier League opener on August 17.
Palhinha, a Portuguese international with Premier League experience, is now on United’s radar as a potentially shrewd temporary signing. Having failed to cement a starting spot at Bayern since his £48 million move from Fulham last summer, the 29-year-old finds himself on the fringes under Vincent Kompany. United are hoping Bayern will allow a loan move to help the player rediscover his rhythm.
The Red Devils’ interest in Palhinha is nothing new—they’ve admired him since his Fulham days. Now, with his limited minutes in Germany and uncertain standing under Kompany, United are ready to pounce. Whether Bayern will prefer a permanent deal or agree to a temporary move remains unclear, but internal talks are reportedly underway.
What makes Palhinha appealing to United is his blend of rugged defensive play and Premier League know-how. Journalist Dom Smith has even labelled him “world-class.” Slotting him into the mix would add fierce competition for places alongside Casemiro, Kobbie Mainoo, and possibly Manuel Ugarte if he joins the club.
From a financial angle, the loan idea makes sense. Palhinha earns around £200,000 a week when bonuses are activated, and while that’s hefty, United are hoping Bayern might cover a portion of those wages. With Ederson now priced well beyond reach, this route offers quality reinforcement without tearing through the rest of the summer budget.
The timing, however, is crucial. Palhinha is expected to meet with Bayern soon to iron out his next move. United, for now, are playing the long game, likely waiting until mid-July before making an official approach—depending on how talks between player and club evolve.
Bottom line: Palhinha is a real and viable midfield target. Ederson is a no-go unless something drastic changes.
