Hansi Flick has openly admitted that he made an error in judgment regarding a Barcelona player he initially wanted to offload during the January transfer window.
At the time, Flick justified his decision by stating that the player did not fit into his tactical plans and lacked the required level to contribute effectively to the team. However, as the season progressed, circumstances changed, leading Flick to reconsider his stance.
According to reports from the Spanish newspaper El Nacional, one of the primary candidates for departure was Eric Garcia. The Spanish defender had fallen out of favor, struggling to secure a place in the starting lineup. While he did feature in several matches due to an injury crisis within the squad, his role diminished significantly once injured players returned.
Additionally, recurring physical setbacks further limited his playing time. Consequently, Barcelona’s management, led by Joan Laporta and Deco, actively sought a club willing to sign Garcia, who had been placed on the transfer list.
Garcia’s situation became even more challenging with the presence of defenders such as Ronald Araújo, Iñigo Martínez, and Pau Cubarsí, as well as the imminent return of Andreas Christensen from injury.
Moreover, he failed to establish himself in midfield, where competition was fierce, with players like Frenkie de Jong, Marc Casado, Gavi, and Pedri González already holding key roles. With limited opportunities at Barcelona, a move to Girona—where he had previously played on loan—seemed like a viable option.
However, an unexpected turn of events allowed Garcia to prove his worth. Injuries to key defenders, including Christensen, Iñigo Martínez, and Araújo, created opportunities for him to step in.
Seizing the moment, Garcia delivered strong and consistent performances, impressing Flick with his reliability and defensive capabilities. His resurgence convinced Flick to reassess his importance to the squad, ultimately leading to a reversal of the decision to sell him.
Currently, if Barcelona were to part ways with a defender, Flick would prefer it to be Christensen, given his ongoing injury struggles since joining the club.
Despite potential transfer offers for Garcia, Flick has reportedly urged Deco and Laporta to reject any bids, reaffirming his trust in the player. Moving forward, Garcia is now considered an essential member of the squad, with Flick determined to rely on him in the upcoming matches.
