Following a disappointing performance against Valencia, Hansi Flick made a surprising decision by dropping one of Barcelona’s key players from the starting lineup.
Despite Barcelona’s commanding 7-1 victory over Valencia at the Montjuïc Stadium, the spotlight turned to another crucial development.
Flick has now officially chosen Wojciech Szczesny as the team’s primary goalkeeper, effectively demoting Inaki Pena. This move significantly reduces Pena’s chances of featuring in the remainder of the season.
According to Spanish newspaper El Nacional, Flick opted to remove Pena from the starting XI due to concerns over his inconsistency and costly errors.
The Barcelona coach fears that such mistakes could jeopardize the team’s performance during this decisive phase of the season.
As a result, Szczesny is set to take over as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. His first appearance in this new role will come in Barcelona’s upcoming Champions League clash against Atalanta.
This decision effectively marks the end of Pena’s tenure as the team’s starting goalkeeper.
