Hansi Flick has openly acknowledged mistakes in some decisions made during the summer, reflecting on choices that are now under reconsideration. Despite Barcelona’s strong start to the season and impressive results, Flick recognizes there is room for improvement.
According to the Spanish newspaper Sport, Flick admitted that letting go of a player who could have been invaluable at this stage was an error.
The player in question is Alex Valle, who delivered an excellent performance during pre-season, particularly in friendly matches. Initially expected to stay with the team, Valle was instead loaned out to another club.
The report explains that Flick could not assure Valle a regular starting position in the first team. Consequently, he opted to retain Gerard Martin and allowed Valle, who had multiple offers, to join another team on loan. Valle moved to Celtic, where he has enjoyed regular playing time in the competitive Scottish Premier League and gained his first taste of Champions League action—something he had not yet experienced at Barcelona.
After a brief adjustment period, Valle has become a key player for Celtic, showcasing exceptional performances that have caught the attention of Barcelona’s management. His consistent displays have established him as an indispensable asset in Scotland, and Barcelona is closely monitoring his progress. There is growing belief at Camp Nou in Valle’s potential and future impact.
Flick has expressed confidence in Valle’s physical and technical attributes, viewing him as an ideal candidate for Barcelona’s left-back position and a natural successor to Alejandro Balde. As a result, the German coach plans to recall Valle after his loan spell concludes in 2025.
Previously, Barcelona’s president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco were seriously considering signing a new left-back. However, Valle’s rapid development has prompted a shift in their strategy.
Rather than pursuing a new signing, the club has decided to rely on Valle, who is expected to rejoin Barcelona in 2025 and compete for a key role in the team.
