Arsenal has gained a significant boost in their pursuit of Nico Williams following Barcelona’s resolution to address their £217 million financial challenges. This development could impact the Gunners’ transfer plans, particularly after Gabriel Jesus sustained an injury during their FA Cup defeat to Manchester United.
Jesus was forced off in the first half due to a knee injury, which appeared to occur on two separate occasions before his substitution for Raheem Sterling.
Despite Arsenal creating several chances, their struggles in the attacking third became more pronounced after Jesus’ departure.
Following the penalty shootout loss, manager Mikel Arteta admitted that Jesus was in significant pain, with the injury potentially being serious. While it does not affect the same knee injured in 2022, medical experts have raised concerns that it might involve an ACL issue.
The injury has amplified Arsenal’s need to strengthen their attack, with only four first-team forwards currently available. As the transfer window approaches, the pressure to secure reinforcements has intensified.
Arsenal has been linked to various forward options, including long-term targets such as Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres, both center-forwards, as well as versatile wingers like Nico Williams and Ademola Lookman.
While these players come with significant price tags, some have release clauses that could facilitate negotiations. Nico Williams, a standout performer for Athletic Bilbao, is one of the most notable targets. His release clause is reported to be around €60 million (£50.4 million), a reasonable figure for a player of his quality and potential.
The injury to Jesus may force Arsenal to reevaluate their January transfer strategy and act swiftly to avoid compromising their ambitions for the season.
