Barcelona are exploring ways to enhance their squad in the upcoming transfer window, with rumors circulating about the potential acquisition of a high-profile midfielder.
Despite the speculation, internal dissent within the club has emerged regarding the necessity of this move. Some key players reportedly believe that signing a big-name midfielder is not a priority at this time.
According to the Spanish newspaper El Nacional, Barcelona’s star midfielder Pedri González, along with several teammates, has been working with Sporting Director Deco to dissuade the club’s management from pursuing Joshua Kimmich, a key target for the Catalan side.
Kimmich’s contract with Bayern Munich is set to expire on June 30, and he has yet to renew it, making a transfer increasingly likely. Clubs such as Real Madrid, Liverpool, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan, Arsenal, and Manchester City are also keen on securing his services.
Former Bayern coach Hansi Flick is reportedly confident he can persuade Kimmich to join Barcelona.
However, notable Barcelona players, including Pedri, Gavi, Fermin López, Lamine Yamal, Alejandro Baldé, and Pau Cubarsi, have expressed their skepticism about the move. These players argue that the squad already has sufficient depth and talent in midfield.
One of the main reasons for their opposition is the rise of Marc Casadó, a young midfielder who has been a revelation this season.
Casadó has stepped up impressively to fill the void left by Sergio Busquets, and his continued development suggests that Barcelona may not need to pursue Kimmich. Pedri and his peers consider Kimmich’s potential signing an unnecessary luxury, especially given its financial implications, such as a significant wage increase.
Barcelona also has another emerging midfield talent in Marc Bernal, a product of La Masia. Although Bernal is currently sidelined with a knee injury sustained in September, he is expected to recover soon and contribute significantly to the team.
The presence of Casadó and Bernal reinforces the belief among several players that the club’s focus should remain on nurturing its young talents rather than pursuing expensive signings.
Ultimately, Barcelona’s internal debates and the performances of their rising stars could influence the club’s strategy in the transfer market, potentially steering them away from acquiring Kimmich and toward prioritizing their homegrown players.
