Following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal, Manchester United icon Paul Scholes has advocated for Zinedine Zidane as a prime candidate for the club’s managerial position. Although United has shown interest in Ruben Amorim, Scholes’s support for Zidane comes amid significant transitions, with Ineos now handling football operations at Old Trafford.
This leadership change has intensified United’s search for a stable, high-profile coach, one who can bring long-term success to the club.
Currently, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy is stepping in as interim manager, but it’s uncertain whether he’ll pursue the role permanently. This uncertainty heightens the urgency for United to secure a lasting solution.
In the meantime, United reportedly reached a preliminary agreement with Sporting Lisbon for Amorim, a young Portuguese manager who led Sporting to a long-awaited league title and has gained attention from other top clubs, including Manchester City.
While Amorim is recognized for his innovative approach, Scholes has expressed doubts about his suitability for United, citing concerns over Amorim’s limited experience with top-tier clubs.
Scholes sees him as an “interesting option” but warns that United’s demanding environment may require a more seasoned leader. For this reason, Scholes views Zidane as a more fitting choice, pointing to the Frenchman’s impressive tenure at Real Madrid, where he won several Champions League and La Liga titles.
Despite Zidane’s strong credentials, Scholes acknowledges one potential drawback: Zidane’s limited English proficiency, which could hinder communication in the Premier League’s fast-paced atmosphere.
Nevertheless, Scholes argues that Zidane’s expertise in managing high-caliber players and achieving success on big stages might make him an ideal candidate to restore United’s prestige in domestic and European competitions.
Scholes also mentioned other possible candidates, such as Brentford’s Thomas Frank, but stressed the need for someone with extensive experience at the top level, capable of commanding respect within a star-studded squad.
According to Scholes, Zidane’s proven track record with an elite club makes him uniquely qualified, although it remains uncertain if Zidane would consider a move to England.
